Simon Werren

Founder/Advisor

Simon comes from the quaint town of Luzern. His educational background in hotel management has allowed him to work for a few years in some of the renowned hotels and Hospitality schools in Switzerland. Driven by his passion and curiosity to explore the world, Simon together with his brother Philipp, discovered 21 countries across 2 continents in one year by bicycle. This was how they first founded a Nonprofit Organization called Brothers Cycling to fund reforestation projects mainly in Sabah, Borneo.

In early 2023, unfulfilled by how food system and farming are channeled to end users and the impact on the environment, Simon went to Brazil to learn about Syntropic Farming from the man himself Ernst Götsch.  The study and practice of Syntropic Farming are mindful towards the environmental sustainability, nurturing a greener future and at the same time contributes towards producing & eating clean quality food.

When SynBorneo was set up, Simon went beyond his role as a founder/advisor. A determined person by nature, he spearheaded the set-up from operational (yes, he automagically became a farmer overnight), administration and communication work that needed to be done to the realization of SynBorneo. Everything took shape from scratch on a poorly degraded plot of land in Lahad Datu. This was a slow process with countless of hours of physical work under the blazing hot Borneo sun. Returning home from the farm, all dirty and drenched in sweat, Swiss born Simon referred to this as his “agro-yoga workout”.

Today, as you can see, this once degraded soil allows for food plants to grow healthily without the use of any herbicide, pesticide or any nasty chemical. Some of us has been blessed to consume the chemical free and organically grown vegetables and fruit from the SynBorneo farm. Simon’s aim is to use this farm as a model farm and to share knowledge to other landowners on the feasibility of Syntropic Farming in Borneo.
